Have your birth notarised abroad
Service description
If you or a close relative were born abroad, you can apply for the birth to be subsequently notarised in the register of births (formerly the register of births) at the registry office in Germany.
There is no obligation for subsequent certification - properly issued birth certificates from abroad are generally recognised in Germany.
However, the subsequent entry in the register of births can be advantageous because the local registry office can then issue you with a German birth certificate. Any translations and notarisations of the foreign certificate will therefore no longer be necessary.
Procedure
- Gather the necessary documents and go to the registry office.
- The registrar will check whether the notarisation can be carried out by a German registry office.
- If the requirements are met, the entry can be made in the register of births.
If required, the registry office will issue you with a birth certificate once you have been entered in the register.
Prerequisites
The subsequent certification of the birth is possible for
- German nationals
- Stateless persons, homeless foreigners and foreign refugees with habitual residence in Germany
Authorised applicants are
- the person to be registered
- their parents
- their children
- the spouse or life partner
Which documents are required?
- Foreign birth certificate with translation; legalisation / apostille if necessary
- valid identity card, passport or travel document
- Marriage and birth certificates of the parents of the person to whom the entry relates
- Naturalisation certificate/citizenship card, if applicable
In addition, it may be necessary to submit further documents - please enquire about this in advance at the registry office.
What fees are incurred?
If a Hessian registry office is responsible:
- Notarisation in the register of births: 47.00 euros, unless the municipality has set a different fee by statute. The fee may be increased if further documents need to be checked.
- Birth certificate/certified printout from the register of births: 12.00 euros (if ordered at the same time, each additional copy costs 6 euros), unless the municipality has set a different fee by statute.
Additional services, such as the issuing of an apostille or translations, may incur additional costs and fees.
