Are you recognised as a stateless person, homeless foreigner or foreign refugee with habitual residence in Germany and got married abroad? Then you can submit an application for subsequent certification of the marriage at a German registry office after the marriage abroad.
The marriage must have been validly concluded in the country in which you got married. German law must not stand in the way of the marriage.
The registry office is responsible for subsequent certification
- your place of residence or
- the place where you last lived, or
- the place of your habitual residence.
Responsible office
If you are resident in Germany, the registry office of the place where you have or last had your residence or habitual abode is responsible.
Otherwise, the registry office I in Berlin is responsible.Prerequisites
- The marriage was contracted abroad and at least one of the spouses is stateless, a homeless foreign national or a recognised foreign refugee with habitual residence in Switzerland.
- Neither of the spouses was or is in possession of German citizenship.
- The marriage is legally valid and compatible with German law.
Which documents are required?
- Application form for notarisation of a marriage abroad
- Foreign marriage certificate with translation; legalisation or apostille if necessary
- valid identity card, passport or travel document
- Birth certificates of the spouse
- Naturalisation certificate or citizenship card, if applicable
- If necessary, further documents with proof of authenticity and, if necessary, translation, depending on the individual case
You must submit all documents in the original.
