Spouses can organise their names while they are married.
The following name declarations can be considered if the spouses are subject to German personal status:
- Determination of a common married name
- Adoption of an accompanying name (the spouse whose name does not become the married name may prefix or append his or her maiden name or the name used at the time of the declaration on the determination of the married name)
Reassumption of your birth name or the name you used until the determination of your married nameYou can have the declaration on the use of your name notarised either by a notary public or by a registrar. The declaration becomes effective as soon as it arrives at the registry office that notarised the marriage.
You will receive a certificate confirming the change of your surname.
The registry office that has to record the marriage or keeps the marriage register in which the marriage is recorded is responsible for accepting the declarations.
