Deaths abroad Notarisation of Germans without domestic residence

  • Service description

A death that occurred abroad can also be notarised, i.e. entered, in a German death register at your request. The so-called subsequent notarisation also applies to Germans who died abroad and who were not resident in Germany.

With the subsequent notarisation, an entry is made in a German death register in addition to the notarisation abroad, i.e. in addition to the entry in the death register of the country in which the death occurred.

Under certain conditions, you can apply for subsequent certification at the competent German registry office.

  • Procedure

You submit the application for subsequent certification of a death to the competent German registry office.

    • Contact the relevant German registry office in writing, by telephone or in person, describe your request and ask for the documents you need to submit.
    • Submit the application for subsequent certification and enclose the necessary documents.
    • The registry office will check your details and the evidence you have provided and, if necessary, will subsequently certify the death.
    • You have the option of applying for a German death certificate at the same registry office for a fee.
  • Responsible office

The registry office in whose jurisdiction the person born abroad has or last had their place of residence or habitual abode is responsible for notarisation; if the deceased person had their last place of residence or habitual abode in Germany, the registry office responsible for this location shall notarise the death. If this does not result in jurisdiction, the registry office in whose jurisdiction the applicant has or last had their domicile or habitual residence shall notarise the civil status case. If this does not result in jurisdiction, the registry office I in Berlin notarises the civil status case.
