Smoke and mist testing

To keep the drainage system in optimal condition and protect the environment, the municipal utilities are inspecting the sewer network in the industrial estate in Nieder-Roden for unauthorised connections and leaks. This sewer inspection is being carried out by Onyx Rohr- und Kanal-Service GmbH, a Veolia company.

Key points at a glance

  • Period: 17 August to 4 September
  • Important: Please pour water down all drains beforehand (e.g. in the cellar, bathroom and kitchen)
  • The mist is completely non-toxic and odourless
  • The fire brigade has been informed

Key Questions and Answers

  • Why do we do this?

During heavy rainfall, sewage treatment works reach their limits when too much clean rainwater flows into the sewers. At the same time, no dirty wastewater must be allowed to flow into the rainwater drains.

Using the smoke test, we can quickly and cost-effectively detect faulty connections (e.g. a gutter incorrectly connected to the wrong drain) and leaky pipes.

  • How does the process work?

A specialised device blows artificial mist – similar to the mist found in a nightclub – into the sewer system. The mist finds its way through the pipes. Wherever it rises from the ground or in other unexpected places, there is usually a fault in the system.

On the other hand, it is perfectly normal for vapour to rise up through the vent pipes on the roofs.

  • What do I need to do beforehand?

Please pour about one litre of water down all the drains in your home (washbasins, showers, toilets, floor drains in the cellar). This will fill the water traps (siphons), preventing the mist from entering your living areas via the pipes.

  • What happens if fog gets into my house?

If mist enters your cellar or flat, there is no need to worry. The mist is completely harmless to health, odourless and leaves no residue on furniture or clothing. Simply air the room briefly.
    Note:
If mist enters your home, this suggests that a trap has dried out or that there is a leak in your domestic plumbing system.

  • Do I have to be at home during the test?

No. As a rule, our staff do not need to enter your property or your house. The inspection is carried out entirely from the public highway.

  • Is this dangerous for my pets?

The mist is also completely harmless to pets (dogs, cats, birds, small animals) and does not irritate the respiratory tract.

The local fire brigade and the police have been informed about the investigation.
