Home slaughter

Home slaughtering is slaughtering outside of commercial slaughterhouses, whereby the meat may only be used in the animal owner's own household.

Anyone who slaughters animals must have the necessary knowledge and skills to do so.

In the case of domestic slaughter, registration for official ante-mortem inspection of ungulates kept as pets or farmed game is only carried out if the owner of the animal has noticed a disturbance in the general condition of the animal immediately before the intended slaughter, which is not due to an accident that occurred immediately beforehand.

Cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and other cloven-hoofed animals, horses and other solipeds are subject to official post-mortem inspection, which must also be carried out for domestic slaughter, if their meat is intended for human consumption. In the case of rabbits, these tests may be omitted if no characteristics are found that make the meat appear unsafe for human consumption. Wild game must also be subjected to ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection.
