"We must build a city, an entire city." – These words by the architect Joseph Maria Olbrich have gone down in history. The Darmstadt ensemble is architecturally and artistically groundbreaking and marks a turning point in architecture and art on the cusp of the 20th century. On the vhs course on Saturday 1 September 2004, participants will enjoy a guided tour of the Mathildenhöhe with an explanation of the history of the artists’ colony, founded in 1899. During the tour, they will gain an insight into the entire complex: the studio building, the exhibition building and the artists’ houses. The visit to the Wedding Tower, including a view into the Princes’ Room and the Wedding Room, as well as access to the viewing platform, is also included (lift available). The course takes place on Sunday, 27 September, from 11.00 am to 1.30 pm in Darmstadt, Mathildenhöhe, Olbrichweg 10. You are responsible for organising your own travel to and from the venue. The meeting point is at the Mathildenhöhe Information Point, a quarter of an hour before the course begins. Note for those with walking difficulties: the guided tour involves long walks and is not wheelchair-accessible. The participation fee covers course organisation, admission and the guided tour.
