Change of surname due to the declaration on the name of civil partners (civil partnership name)

  • Service description

Civil partners may choose a joint civil partnership name during the existence of the registered civil partnership, provided they have not already done so when the civil partnership was established. The civil partner whose name does not become the civil partnership name may prefix or append his/her maiden name or the name used at that time to the civil partnership name.

The name from a previous civil partnership, including a possible accompanying name, can also be considered as the name actually used.

Once you have chosen a joint civil partnership name, you may not change it for the duration of the civil partnership.

Foreign civil partners are generally subject to the name law of their home country. If one of the partners has their habitual residence in Germany, there is a right to choose between the law of the country to which the foreign partner belongs and German law.
