Extension of a temporary driving licence

  • Service description

    The driving licence for categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E is issued for a maximum of five years and can be extended by five years at the request of the licence holder.

  • Prerequisites

    • You must provide proof of your eyesight and a medical certificate confirming that you are physically and mentally fit to drive a lorry.
    • For D classes, you must also present a certificate of good conduct. If you are over 50 years old, you must also submit a performance psychology report for D classes.
  • Which documents are required?

    • Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport)
    • Previous driving licence
    • a current photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format)
    • Proof of eyesight in accordance with the model in Annex 6 No. 2 to the Driving Licence Ordinance.
      You can have the certificate issued by an ophthalmologist, a company or occupational physician or a doctor from the health authority. A certificate issued is valid for 2 years.
    • Proof of physical and mental aptitude in accordance with the specimen in Annex 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance
      You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.
    • In addition, for categories D, D1, DE, D1E, if you have reached the age of 50, a performance psychology certificate. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.
  • What fees are incurred?

    The fee is based on the current version of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.

  • What deadlines do I have to observe?

    The application can be submitted at the earliest six months before the expiry date of the previous driving licence.

    Please note: If the application is submitted after the expiry date of the previous driving licence, a new driving licence will be issued instead of an extension. The fact that you were previously the holder of a corresponding driving licence is then no longer evident from the new licence.
