    If you wish to marry abroad, there may be a legal standard in the country where you intend to marry that requires you to present such a certificate.

    A certificate of no impediment to marriage for marriage abroad can also be issued in Germany for stateless persons, persons entitled to asylum, recognised refugees and persons whose nationality cannot be determined.

    The certificate is issued by the registry office in whose jurisdiction the applicant has their domicile or habitual residence.

    The certificate of no impediment to marriage is valid for a period of six months.

  • Procedure

    • An application for a certificate of no impediment to marriage is made to the relevant registry office.
    • If the examination shows that there is no impediment to the intended marriage under German law, and if the necessary personal details of both parties to the marriage have been provided, the registry office will issue the certificate of matrimonial capacity applied for.
  • Prerequisites

    • If the person wishing to marry abroad has one of the following personal statuses:
    • Stateless
    • Eligible for asylum
    • Recognised refugee
    • or persons whose nationality cannot be determined,
    • and have their habitual residence in Germany.
  • Which documents are required?

    • The requirements, type and format of the evidence to be provided and the examination of the marriage requirements are governed by German law, as for a German citizen.
    • Evidence must be provided in the form of public documents:
      • The civil status.
      • The domicile, habitual residence.
      • Nationality.
      • As well as the last marriages and/or civil partnerships and their dissolution, if applicable.
  • What fees are incurred?

    • Costs may be incurred for the issue of a certificate of no impediment to marriage. Please contact your registry office.
  • What deadlines do I have to observe?

    Once issued, the certificate of no impediment is valid for a period of six months.
