Identity card notification due to loss

Declaration of loss of a passport or identity card
  • Service description

As a German citizen, you are obliged to have an identity card from the age of 16. If you lose your identity card, you must immediately report it to an identity card authority, a citizens' office or the police. If you do not do this, you are committing an offence. You can apply for a new ID card at the same time as reporting the loss to the ID card office or citizens' office. If you have a valid passport, you do not need to apply for a new ID card.

If you report the loss, the online ID card function will also be blocked. This ensures that any attempted misuse is recognised immediately. After blocking, it is not possible to use the online ID function of your ID card or to have its data read from your smartphone (Smart eID).
You can only have the signature function blocked by the provider of your signature certificate.
