"At home in the centre" - project progress & measures

Background

In October 2022, the Nieder-Roden district was included in the federal funding programme "Sustainable inner cities and centres" with the "At home in the centre" project. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building. The aim was the sustainable and future-proof development and revitalisation of the district centre.

The social centre and Puiseauxplatz were particularly central locations. By activating, revitalising, using and redesigning them, the aim was to provide impetus for the centre and the entire district. The project comprised various measures, particularly at the concept level, which were implemented by November 2025. The federal government contributed 75 per cent of the funding and the local authority 25 per cent.

  • Disposal fund

The citizens' committee managed the utilisation fund and advised, evaluated and voted on the applications submitted. This meant that projects, temporary measures, smaller events and ideas from citizens, clubs, associations or local stakeholders to increase the attractiveness of the district centre could be submitted and implemented with the help of the budget.

  • St Martin's Market 2023 and 2024

In November 2023, the first St Martin's Market took place on Puiseauxplatz. It was the inaugural event in the "Off to Puiseauxplatz" series and offered a colourful programme for young and old. Due to its great success, the St Martin's Market was repeated in November 2024.

  • City festival 2024 and 2025

In May 2024, the town festival was celebrated to mark the 50th anniversary of the town twinning with Puiseaux and Hainburg an der Donau. The event attracted numerous visitors. This was followed up in May 2025 with the second town festival, which was again very popular.

  • Youth work

As part of the project, the leisure programme for young people was expanded. The funding was used to purchase a trailer for the youth mobile and, among other things, a table football table, a slackline and two basketball hoops. The youth mobile was used in particular during the summer holidays and will continue to be used in the future.

Since September 2025, there has also been an open meeting place for young people on the premises of the Protestant parish on Puiseauxplatz once or twice a week. There are regular cookery, craft and games activities as well as workshops. This meeting place will also continue to exist.

  • Pop-up store "No'1 by Journal"

With the pop-up store funding programme, a vacant shop was used for an innovative business idea. This enabled the opening of No'1 by Journal, a food and shopping shop offering regional and local products. The products can be eaten on site, taken away or purchased directly.

  • Redesign of Puiseauxplatz

In autumn 2025, Puiseauxplatz was given an urban upgrade. New planting beds were created, existing green spaces extended, new trees planted and seating and rubbish bins installed. The measure increased the quality of stay, improved the microclimate and strengthened the retail and catering sectors.

In addition, bollards were installed in Rodensteinstrasse to protect visitors at events, while delivery traffic remains possible.

  • Cycle lanes

Wiesbadener Straße, Otzbergstraße and Krümmlingsweg were redesignated as cycle lanes in accordance with the mobility concept. This was implemented with markings, signage and pictograms at the junctions. The aim was to bundle cycle traffic, create safe connections between the school, train station, sports arena and Puiseauxplatz and improve the quality of life in the town centre. Cyclists have priority, cars are still allowed to use the roads. The car parks have been reorganised and the markings adapted.

  • Temporary seating

Mobile seating and plant elements made from recycled materials with a solar pump for self-sufficient irrigation have been installed in the centre of Puiseauxplatz. They help to improve the quality of stay and will continue to make Puiseauxplatz and the district centre more attractive for visitors.
