Young people visit former Rollwald camp

The former Rollwald labour camp was liberated on 26 March 1945. To mark the 80th anniversary, city councillor Winno Sahm invited people to take part in a tour that focussed on key locations on the former camp site. The invitation was aimed at current participants of the municipal vocational qualification project Rodgau 16plus as part of political education work. The aim was to raise historical awareness of the events of the Nazi era and to convey the importance of remembrance for the present. As many of the participants came from Rodgau themselves, Councillor Sahm made it clear that the crimes of the Nazi era did not only take place in faraway places, but also right here in the centre of their home town. Stops on the tour included the so-called Erbhöfe, the former guards' barracks and the former camp cemetery. Here, special attention was paid to the memorial stone, the steles with stylised barbed wire symbolising the fencing of the former camp and the information boards documenting the history of the site. Winno Sahm gave the young people an impressive insight into the history of the camp. The event was followed with great interest by the participants and encouraged them to reflect on the consequences of injustice, forced labour and dictatorship.
