The beaver has been back in Rodgau on the River Rodau for several years now. The town council estimates that there are around 6 to 10 animals in several places in the local area. In the Burgstraße area in Hainhausen, two beaver dams were built in quick succession north of August-Neuhäusel-Straße, which have ensured that the incoming water flows directly into the flooding area. In order to return the water to the Rodau, the city of Rodgau has already organised numerous on-site meetings with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, the Lower Water Authority and the Darmstadt Regional Council to find a solution. In order to be allowed to remove a beaver dam, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority must issue a licence under species protection law. This application has already been submitted by the town of Rodgau for one of the two dams. If trees on private property are gnawed by beavers, the town of Rodgau will be happy to install beaver protection free of charge. The former millrace will be slightly widened in consultation with the Offenbach district conservation authority to ensure better drainage from the flood basin back into the Rodau. In addition, the increased incidence of mosquitoes, which is due to the stagnant water, will be controlled for the first time this year. Water samples are now being taken regularly at Burgstrasse, Finkensee and Bruchgraben in order to have the mosquito larvae analysed by a laboratory. To date, no larvae have been found in the above-mentioned bodies of water.
