This year, the Rodgau public library is once again offering a seed library in cooperation with the Verein zur Erhaltung der Nutzpflanzenvielfalt e.V. (Association for the Preservation of Crop Diversity). Amateur gardeners can "borrow" seeds from the Nieder-Roden library to sow in their home garden or in balcony pots. The plants are cared for over the summer and the ripe fruits are finally harvested. Seeds should then be obtained from part of the harvest, dried and returned to the library. This way, the project can start again next year with new seeds. Four decades ago, the United Nations reported on the massive loss of diversity in crop varieties. Although gene databases ensure the survival of old varieties, it is only through regular cultivation that they remain alive and in our consciousness. More and more people are getting involved in sustainability, diversity and species protection and so the idea of the seed library is spreading. Gardening enthusiasts can make a contribution and ensure more plant diversity by supporting the production of seed-resistant, GMO-free seeds. Up to four bags of single-variety seeds can be borrowed. The seeds should then be sown according to instructions and the plant cared for until harvest. The seeds are then collected, dried and filled into the prepared sachets. The newly obtained seeds can then be returned to the library. The public library also has numerous media available to help you design your own garden or balcony and select and care for the right plants.
