Service description
You can apply to extend your driving licence to categories C, CE, C1, C1E.
Category C entitles you to drive motor vehicles with a maximum permissible mass of over 3.5 tonnes with a maximum of 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat). You may also use the licence to tow a trailer with a maximum permissible mass of up to 750 kg. You must have a class B driving licence. The minimum age is 21 years. It is 18 years for persons during or after vocational training as a professional driver, specialist driver or a comparable state-recognised training occupation.
The category C1 driving licence entitles you to drive light commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 tonnes up to a maximum of 7.5 tonnes. The vehicle may have a maximum of 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat. In addition, a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of 750 kg may be towed. To obtain a category C1 driving licence, you must hold a category B driving licence and be at least 18 years old.
The category CE driving licence entitles you to drive combinations of category C vehicles and trailers with a maximum permissible mass of over 750 kg. You must be at least 21 years old. You also need a category C driving licence for this category.
The category C1E driving licence entitles you to drive a combination of a category C1 vehicle and a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg. The maximum permissible total weight of this combination may not exceed 12 tonnes and the maximum permissible total weight of the trailer may not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. For this category, you must be at least 18 years old and have a category C1 driving licence.

Prerequisites
- Main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany
- Class C: at least 21 years (in certain cases 18 years) and previous possession of class B
- CE category: at least 21 years old (18 years in certain cases) and previous possession of a category C driving licence
- Category C1: at least 18 years of age and previous possession of a category B driving licence
- Category C1E: at least 18 years old and previous possession of category C1 driving licence
- Suitability and passing the driving licence test
Which documents are required?
- Appointment of a driving school
- Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport), registration certificate if applicable
- a current photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format). You can find more detailed information on the photo sample board of the Bundesdruckerei.
- Proof of eyesight in accordance with the model in Annex 6 No. 2 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. You can have the certificate issued by an ophthalmologist, a company or occupational physician or a doctor from the health authority. A certificate issued is valid for 2 years.
- Proof of physical and mental aptitude in accordance with the model in Annex 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. You can have the certificate issued by a doctor. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.

What fees are incurred?
The fee is based on the current version of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
Application for extension of a driving licence / driving licence can be made at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age
The driving licence is issued for a maximum of 5 years.

What else should I know?
Remarks
When extending a driving licence, the old original licence must be handed in when collecting the new card driving licence or the provisional proof of driving authorisation.
If you wish to use your driving licence for commercial purposes, the regulations on professional driver qualification (BKrFQG) must be observed.
