Memorial days

Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January

The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism was introduced in 1996 as a nationally recognised day of remembrance and was designated by the United Nations as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust in 2005. The day takes place on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by the Red Army in 1945.

Remembrance Day - Sunday, 16 November 2025

The National Day of Mourning originally commemorated the many millions of victims of the First - and later also the Second - World War and was introduced by the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge). In the meantime, the focus has broadened and the day commemorates the victims of war, tyranny and terrorism in general. It always takes place on the penultimate Sunday before the First Advent.
