  • January

    • Headmaster Winfried Döring is retiring. He was headmaster of the Georg Büchner School in Jügesheim for 26 years.
    • After 44 years, Deutsche Post is giving up its location at Puiseauxplatz in Nieder-Roden, causing a great deal of frustration among the local population.
    • Seven people have an accident in their cars on the B45 motorway when the car of a man from Rodgau breaks down on the hard shoulder. A few minutes later, a woman's car skidded due to black ice, hit the broken-down vehicle and then slid into the ditch. She suffers serious injuries. While the co-driver of the breakdown lorry looks after the driver, another young female driver also loses control of her car due to icy conditions and hits the first aider. He is trapped under the car and suffers serious head injuries.
    • The first floor of the Rektor-Geißler-Haus in Dudenhofen has been converted into an art gallery. The ground floor will continue to be used as a registry office and local court. In future, the new Rodgau Gallery will host four exhibitions per year, each lasting eight weeks.
    • Dr Patrick Schäfer is Rodgau's first foster dad. The 27 female day carers in Rodgau have now been joined by a man. Dr Patrick Schäfer is a biologist and lives in Jügesheim with his wife and 4-year-old son. Two days a week, the scientist conducts clinical research at a pharmaceutical company. On the other three days, his living room is transformed into a playroom and he looks after children up to the age of four.

    • After 30 years, the poplars have to go: the annual tree inspection reveals that ten poplars along the Rodau have to be felled. They are among the last of a long row of poplars along the Rodau. However, they have to be felled due to old age and fungal infestation. Thirty years ago, around 600 poplars still stood on the banks of the Rodau and characterised the townscape. Today, replacement trees are being planted elsewhere.
    • With the cooperation agreement, the city of Rodgau and the Freie Musikschule Rodgau are closing several gaps. With 1125 pupils, the Freie Musikschule Rodgau is one of the largest educational institutions in the town. Thanks to the cooperation, the music school currently offers courses at 13 daycare centres, including early musical education, and fulfils its mission of broad-based musical work on the one hand and the promotion of gifted children on the other in a professional and committed manner.
    • The city of Rodgau, on the other hand, demonstrates its shared municipal responsibility for a high-quality music programme at the music school with an annual subsidy of 100,000 euros.
    • The call-and-collect taxi (AST) celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since the AST was founded in February 1994, Werner Weilmünster and his company Funk-Taxi have transported more than 200,000 passengers on behalf of the municipal utility company, making it an integral part of local public transport in Rodgau.
    • The Nieder-Roden public library building on Puiseauxplatz is damaged by a bin fire in the courtyard. A Smart car parked in front of the door is also damaged. However, the library itself can still be used unhindered, only the balcony is closed as a precaution.

    • Fire in a warehouse in Weiskirchen triggers large-scale operation: The fire started in the workshop of an agricultural business and spread to the roof. The fire brigade is able to bring the fire under control, but damage totalling around 50,000 euros is caused.
    • Mystery surrounding hundreds of dead fish in the Rodau: Walkers find dead fish in the Rodau in Lämmerspiel, plus some in Rodgau. The lower nature conservation authority initiates investigations. It is also not clear why foam has formed in places with turbulent watercourses in Rodgau days before, but it could also have completely natural causes.
    • Fools are not deterred by rain: The prospects don't look good at first. The sky is cloudy and raindrops keep falling from the sky. But as the carnival parade begins in Jügesheim, the weather changes. The rain disappears, the sun comes out and the jesters celebrate the highlight of the street carnival.
    • TSV Dudenhofen is about to make a groundbreaking decision. At an extraordinary general meeting, 147 members vote in favour of instructing the board to plan the hall and make initial preparations for its construction. The old sports hall on Forsthausstraße is to be demolished and the site sold. Instead, a new sports hall is to be built next to the tennis centre of TC Rodgau on Opelstraße.

    • Unknown persons blow up an ATM at the Sparkasse Weiskirchen bank. The damage to the building and inventory amounts to around 50,000 euros.
    • Rodgau is a pioneer in the switch to electric cars: with 15 charging points throughout the city, Rodgau now has more charging stations than any other city in the Offenbach district. In addition, four electric vehicles are available for car-sharing customers.
    • Stefan Lambert is the new operations manager with a technical focus at Stadtwerke Rodgau. Together with Markus Ebel-Waldmann, he will manage Stadtwerke Rodgau in future.

    • The last shopping centre in Rollwald is closing its doors. The kiosk was once an important local supplier, but after 47 years the shop is now closing.
    • Big party for the 125th anniversary: The 250 or so members of the Dudenhofen Volunteer Fire Brigade are celebrating their 125th anniversary with a two-day party at the Dalles in Dudenhofen.
    • The opinion of the citizens is to be included: With a so-called charrette process, the town of Rodgau is offering citizens the opportunity to contribute their own suggestions and wishes to the remodelling of the old Nieder-Roden cemetery. Around 80 Nieder-Roden residents are thinking about the future together. But as different as the people are, so are their wishes.
    • Helga Hoffmann and Lothar Mark receive the city's second highest honour. The Citizens' Medal in Gold is the second highest honour awarded by the city. In recognition of their many years of service to the town of Rodgau, as well as their achievements in the life of associations and as co-founders and founders of a wide range of social projects, Helga Hoffmann and Lothar Mark receive the Gold Citizens' Medal of the town of Rodgau.
    • Following cable damage during drilling work in Offenbach, countless telephone and internet connections in Rodgau are down. It will be several days before the severed fibre optic cable, which serves as the connection to Rodgau, can be repaired.
    • Ten months after Besi & Friends returned to Rodgau from the world's toughest bike race, the cinema film "All for One" celebrates its premiere. The second film about Besi & Friends tells the story of the team's top sporting achievements in the "Race across America" and the highs and, above all, lows they overcome together. As Beseler, a racing cyclist with MS, suffered a life-threatening accident two months before the start through no fault of his own, he was unable to take part as planned and lead the team of four.

    • The ground-breaking ceremony marks the start of the construction of the Sportfreunde Rodgau e.V. hall on Weiskircher Straße. The Sportfreunde secure the municipal site next to the Rodgau-Mitte volunteer fire station for 99 years. In return, they pay 2348.48 euros ground rent per year to the city. According to the contract, the new hall must be built within 36 months.
    • The municipal website has been given a new look. With the relaunch, the new homepage www.rodgau.de is not only more modern and clearer, it also adapts to all end devices. To avoid lengthy searches, the search function has been given a prominent position.
    • Rodgau is taking part in CITY CYCLING for the first time and is among the newcomers in Hesse and in first place with the highest number of parliamentarians. 307 cyclists cover 72,209 kilometres in ten days and thus avoid 10,254 kg of CO2 compared to car journeys.
    • The Rodgau senior citizens' cinema celebrates its premiere with the film Grand Budapest Hotel. In cooperation with the local cinemas, the municipal senior citizens' advisory service is introducing the Rodgau senior citizens' cinema, giving older people the opportunity to watch a film once a month at a reduced admission price and spend entertaining hours at the cinema.

    • Young people on a German language course at Claus-von-Stauffenberg School collect 800 dollars for the initial equipment of a school library in Cambodia.
    • The Nieder-Roden community centre is being extensively renovated for the first time in almost 30 years. The building is being given a new roof and three new ventilation systems.
    • The topping-out ceremony for the first inpatient hospice in the Offenbach district at the Jügesheim water tower is a complete success. During the event, the Rotary Rodgau Hospice Foundation received donations totalling 130,500 euros for the good cause.
  • August

    • Opera at the bathing lake. Around 500 people watch Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" at the lido.
    • Dudenhöfer maypole has to be taken down prematurely. Due to the prolonged hot spell, the drying cracks on the tree are too large. The Dudenhofen trade association therefore takes it down as a precautionary measure.
    • The Rodgau Lido Festival will take place on two days instead of one, under new management and on a larger scale.
    • The Rewe supermarket in Hainhausen is robbed by a 17-year-old youth who is caught a short time later thanks to the good nose of a sniffer dog.
    • It only takes a few minutes for storm Bernd to turn Rodgau into a battlefield. A 68-year-old man is hit by a tree, roofs fly off houses, trees fall and countless cars are destroyed.
    • Wendelin Meisner, parish priest of the Catholic parish of St Nicholas and St Mary's in Jügesheim, is retiring after 46 years. Father John Peter becomes his successor.
    • The ground-breaking ceremony marks the start of the construction of the new daycare centre including ten residential units in Luise-Hensel-Weg in the Hainhausen development area.
    • The city of Rodgau celebrates the 40th anniversary of the municipality together with its citizens with a colourful festival and participants from all parts of the city. Representatives from the four twin towns are travelling to the festival.
  • September

    • With whistles and a demonstration, the citizens' initiative is striving for a change in traffic on the local thoroughfare. They are calling for no lorries, a 30 km/h speed limit and stricter controls.
    • The city council approves the first phase of the urban development framework plan. However, there is still a long way to go before the Rodgau-West residential area is complete.
    • The annual 24-hour run raises almost 97,000 euros in donations.
    • Rodgau composting plant as a model for Saudi Arabia. Employees from the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture are guests at the Rodgau composting plant. Waste experts from South Korea visited the plant back in spring 2017.
    • The 38th municipal children's festival takes place on Puiseauxplatz in Nieder-Roden for the first time. Visitors and organisers are delighted with the new location.
    • The storm on 18 August made the forest recreation area unusable.
    • The two roundabouts in the Hainhausen development area will be equipped with wind chimes and the insects will be surrounded by a bee-friendly flowering meadow.
    • After the storm, the forest recreation centre in Weiskirchen cannot be opened for the Musikverein's Oktoberfest. However, the association changes its plans at short notice and sets up the tent on a nearby meadow. The term "Wies'n" thus also has a Rodgau reference.
    • The Besi & Friends Foundation collected 10,000 euros in donations while cycling uphill in the Odenwald.

    • The foundation stone for the Hospice am Wasserturm is laid with a time capsule.
    • The electricity concession for Rodgau Nord is awarded to Stadtwerke Rodgau Energie GmbH. The previous grid operator takes legal action against the award of the electricity grid for the next 20 years.
    • Almost a year after the discovery of a man's body at the edge of a forest in Hainhausen, the dead man's former wife is sentenced to three years in prison for assault.
  • November

    • Benjamin Schwarz, Chairman of the Green Party, resigns as a city councillor.
    • The city of Rodgau is building three apartment blocks on Dudenhöfer Strasse in Jügesheim. Its aim is to create more affordable living space in Rodgau.
    • The city councillors unanimously decide to purchase an additional plot of land next to the current location of Stadtwerke Rodgau at Justus-von-Liebig-Straße 8 in order to create expansion space for the company.
    • 133 trees for Rodgau's orchards are paid for by the Offenbach district during the annual collection campaign.
    • During a public information event, around 80 visitors exchange ideas, fears and wishes about the planned Rodgau-West residential area.
    • JSK Rodgau is building another artificial turf pitch at the Maingau-Energie-Stadion. Despite very high acquisition costs, the advantages of an artificial pitch outweigh the disadvantages.
    • Rodgau is committed to tolerance and respect. The Rodgau Declaration of Diversity is solemnly signed by 65 organisations and more than 100 people.
  • December

    • The first Rodgau sledge race organised by the Dudenhofen trade association spices up the Rodgau Advent market in Jügesheim on the last day.
    • The Protestant church in Dudenhofen is 250 years old.
    • The third attempt at a merger is still unsuccessful. The Sportgemeinschaft and the Turngemeinschaft Nieder-Roden remain independent, as formal and financial hurdles still appear too great.
    • With a majority in favour of cooperation, the municipal council decides to develop a business park on Boschstrasse in Weiskirchen Ost.
    • The new city bus route OF-40 goes into operation, replacing the previous three Rodgau bus routes.
    • The Rodgau initiative "Kult-inklusive" and the "MAJD" working group are honoured with the "Ist doch Ehrensache" youth management award from the Offenbach district.
    • The first 15 Town Trees are planted during a small ceremony in Rodau Park. Around 130 replacement trees for the trees destroyed by the storm in August are collected during the "Town Baum - 10fürEinen" fundraising campaign.
    • After more than 25 years, the AST shared taxi is moving from the previous operator "Funk-Taxi Rodgau" run by Werner Weilmünster to the company "Taxi Ludwig".
    • The traditional Jügesheim pub "Bei Ammie" has to make way for a new building.
    • A place in a daycare centre: the town of Rodgau fulfils this extraordinary wish with its Wishing Tree campaign.
