  • January

    • The turn of the millennium is a turbulent time for the volunteer fire brigade. Seven operations have to be dealt with, including a fire in the district refugee centre in Rollwald.
    • The citizens' office offers an additional service: an RMV ticket sales point will be set up on the premises of the citizens' office of the town of Rodgau.
    • A large supporting programme attracts 3000 people to the 6th timber auction at the Gänsbrüh.
    • Following an increase in the price of drinking water, drinking water in Nieder-Roden is more expensive than in the other districts.
    • At the CDU's traditional New Year's reception, Minister President Roland Koch talks about the donations scandal.
    • The number of active members in the Weiskirchen fire brigade increases from 33 to 36 and the association also grows. Less pleasing is the fact that every fourth call-out is triggered by a false alarm.
    • As part of a project week, an eco-check is carried out at the Georg Büchner School under the direction of the municipal energy consultant Ralf Bendel and serious defects are discovered: mould in two rooms, a damaged green roof and inadequate first aid kits are the worst defects. As an immediate measure, the mould-infested rooms are closed immediately. A detailed assessment of the damage will be carried out by the district building authority.
    • Landscape architect Dirk Schelhorn, the Umlandverband Frankfurt and the town of Rodgau present the utilisation concept for developing the Rodgau lake into a leisure area.
    • The UVF will invest DM 2 million in the leisure centre. The main aim is to create a nature-friendly and family-friendly design.
    • At the end of the month, local councillor Helmut Sattler steps down from his position on the Weiskirchen local council.

    • Dietzenbach becomes a "district centre" town. The district administration will move 700 employees to Dietzenbach. Economic reasons and the central location are the deciding factors. In Jügesheim's town centre, work begins on renovating the sewers with subsequent paving around the town hall and church.
    • Cases of bereavement and illness as well as general cost-cutting measures prompt the magistrate not to provide a float in the Rodgau carnival procession.
    • A robbery at the Toom supermarket triggers the biggest police operation in Rodgau in recent years. A special task force frees an employee. The perpetrator escapes unrecognised without any loot. This was the second robbery at the Toom supermarket in five years.
    • The honorary city councillor Mr Schubert, who died in December 1999, is replaced on the city council by the former city councillor Edgar Krausch.
    • As the first major step in the administrative reform, offices in the town hall are being merged with the aim of simplifying administration. This measure is intended to bring benefits for the public in particular.
    • The demolition of the motorway bridge near Weiskirchen is causing traffic chaos around Rodgau. The bridge was the last structure of the old Rodgau/Hanau motorway junction.
    • The Umlandverband Frankfurt approves the utilisation concept for the area around the Nieder-Roden bathing lake. The water area is to be increased from the current 35 hectares to 45 hectares. The bathing beach can grow to a length of 950 metres. The concept envisages the construction of a leisure centre with diving platforms, water slide, bathing island, water ski facility and boat hire as well as a skating rink and beach volleyball court. A special feature is the planned 100 metre long and 15 metre high climbing wall.

    • Due to cost-cutting measures by the federal government, Johanniter will only be allocated 34 helpers. This compares with a requirement of 41 helpers. This makes it difficult to maintain regular operations.
    • First Councillor Alfred Schüler passed away on 8 March. The popular politician and club man from Nieder-Roden had been battling cancer for a year and a half, to which he finally succumbed.
    • The Weiskirchen local council elects Hermann Jäger as the new head of the village.
  • April

    • Arson is the cause of a major fire that causes considerable damage to two factory buildings belonging to Rolladenbau Bergmann and Seufert. The arsonists are not caught.
    • The decision is made to expand the lido. The first measures planned are a beach volleyball court and a skating track.
    • The Rodgauer Einkaufsgemeinschaft (REGE) offers electricity from renewable energy sources. By forming a purchasing group under the umbrella of Stadtwerke Rodgau, the green electricity can be offered at a favourable bundled price.
      Klaus Kölpin, well-known and versatile press spokesman for the town of Rodgau, is retiring. Klaus Kölpin took over the press and information department in 1989. He is now heading towards his goal of circumnavigating the globe as a single-handed sailor.
  • May

    • The ground-breaking ceremony marks the official start of the expansion of the Nieder-Roden lido. Initially, three beach volleyball courts and a skate park will be built, bushes and trees planted and the terrain modelled. Later, the construction of a floating diving platform and a bathing island is planned.
    • The CDU nominates Hildegard Ripper for the office of First City Councillor.
    • At the first Miss Rodgau competition after 14 years in Dudenhofen, contestants from near and far - but not from Rodgau - compete against each other. Miss Rodgau 2000 comes from Bruchköbel.
    • The new usage regulations for the forest leisure centres are enforced for the first time. The recreational facilities may not be used from 10.00 pm to 8.00 am. Irregular checks are carried out to ensure compliance with the user regulations.
    • The 10th class at Heinrich Böll School had a stroke of luck on their school trip to Italy. They lose their passports, money and luggage when their coach catches fire. There were no injuries.
    • Despite the bad weather, the Gassenfest in Jügesheim offers a well-attended supporting programme.
    • Mayor Thomas Przibilla celebrates his 50th birthday and has been an elected political official in Rodgau for 10 years.
  • June

    • Dudenhofen and Nieuwpoort have been twinned for 25 years. The anniversary is celebrated with guests from Nieuwpoort at a party in the Dudenhofen community centre.
    • The twin towns of Nieder-Roden and Puiseaux are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of their twinning in Puiseaux. 120 guests from Nieder-Roden are travelling to France for the celebrations.
    • The 25-year partnership between Hainburg and Nieder-Roden will also be celebrated together in Austria.
    • The municipal council decides that dogs must be kept on a lead. A fine of up to DM 10,000 may be imposed for non-compliance with the leash requirement.
    • The city parliament elects Hildegard Ripper as First City Councillor. With the election of the new First City Councillor, Mayor Thomas Przibilla announces the reorganisation of the departments.
    • The reconstruction of the bakery, which is being carried out by the association for the promotion of cultural projects in Dudenhofen, clears the formal hurdles. The district grants planning permission and holds out the prospect of subsidies.
  • July

    • In Nieder-Roden, 120 judo fighters spend a week learning martial arts and social behaviour from Japanese grandmasters. For fifteen years, the sports hall in Wiesbadener Straße has been opened for this event, which is unique in Hesse. The participants are also hoping for a sporting get-together next year.
    • Trees and flowers are beautiful to look at ... and need a lot of care. That's what some committed Rodgau residents thought. Franz Stockdreher and many others replace and add plants, bringing joy not only to themselves but to all citizens.
    • Magistrate against the local association at the opening match of the new beach volleyball facilities at the Nieder-Roden bathing lake. More than 1000 tonnes of sand are used to dampen many a pike jump.
    • The Nieder-Roden youth fire brigade celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary with a "major exercise": the rectory is on fire, injured people have to be rescued and the "Zur Eisenbahn" hotel evacuated...
    • Hildegard Ripper takes up her position as First City Councillor on the executive floor of the town hall. Finance, social and youth administration are the areas of her department.
    • "Work for work" is the principle of Bürgerhilfe Rodgau, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary. New members are always being sought.
    • Christmas spirit in the middle of July: illuminated poinsettias are hung up on Jügesheim's main street for visitors to see and approve of.
  • August

    • Following its completion, the B 45 junction near the water tower is finally largely free of traffic jams.
      The "serious side of life" begins for 560 school starters in Rodgau, although the sweets from the school cone certainly make the start more pleasant.
    • The Don Bosco home in the forest of Nieder-Roden is transformed into an open-air theatre for a few days. Even the path to the actual performance venue of "Schinderhannes" leads past soldiers, washerwomen and peasants. The performance under the direction of Erich Schmekel enchants the audience.
    • The "Leineweberhaus" in Jügesheim is demolished. The owner could not reasonably be expected to renovate it. The town is now one monument poorer.
    • Birgit Grebe from Jügesheim is making the town famous far beyond Rodgau's borders. She is the winner of the "Wheel of Fortune" show on Kabel 1 on 22 August.
      The Red Cross in Dudenhofen honours hard-working blood donors. Wolfgang Fortak holds the absolute record with 125 blood donations.
    • Another record is set: the four millionth visitor is expected at the bathing lake in Nieder-Roden. On the best-attended day of the summer, 11,145 swimmers are romping around the lake.
    • The discussion about fighting dogs extends into schools. A class at the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule moves its social studies lessons to the dog training centre of the German Shepherd Dog Association in Weitkirchen. Here, the youngsters learn the basics of training the animals.
  • September

    • The 24-hour run organised by "Gemeinsam mit Behinderten" is always a real highlight. This year's event raised an enormous sum of around 330,000 marks. A large part of the money will go towards the construction of the planned residential complex for the disabled in the heart of Jügesheim. 482 individual runners and wheelchair users in 48 teams ensured excitement.
    • Another record sum is astonishing the people of Rodgau. 33 million marks are to be made available for the refurbishment of the Georg Büchner School.
    • The four millionth visitor to the lido was announced this month. Annette Büttner and her sons Daniel and Patrick as well as Gerhard Gabriel will be able to enjoy free swimming next year.
    • The first "Rodgau Fair" opens its doors to visitors for three days on the fairground in Nieder-Roden. Around 140 exhibitors - most of them from Rodgau - present themselves and their products. Around 20,000 visitors are expected to attend the fair, and the town's children's festival has once again delighted children of all ages this year. Games, cakes, bratwurst and small gifts attracted visitors to the forest leisure centre in Jügesheim.
    • Initially, the purchase was to be cancelled, but now the town has decided to acquire and renovate the former synagogue in Weiskirchen.
    • The pupils of the Heinrich Böll School put in a very special effort. Tabaluga (Dominik Almstetter and Marvin Gahulu) and Princess Lilli (Saskia Reimann and Katharina Tancros), an evil ruler, bees and many more receive rapturous applause from the audience. Almost a year of preparation had paid off.
    • District Administrator Peter Walter and District Councillor Claudia Jäger present Peter Tauchert with the Offenbach am Main District Environmental Award for his work as a consultant on wasp issues.
    • The birthday children of 20 November are invited to the citizens' reception in the foyer of the town hall. Renate Kredel draws the magical date of 27 October from the lottery drum for the following year. Those born on this date are the guests at the 2001 citizens' reception.
    • Many can get enough of it! Big Max" weighs an impressive 58.5 kilos - a giant pumpkin that can be admired at the fruit and vegetable exhibition in Hainhausen.
    • The most modern traffic light system in the greater Frankfurt area is put into operation at the Wasserturm junction. Microprocessors and contact loops now regulate the flow of traffic.
  • october

    • Rodgau - or at least many children - is not immune to 14 October. The publication of the fourth volume about the wizard student "Harry Potter" is eagerly awaited with a magical breakfast, readings and countless pre-orders.
    • The "Neighbours protect neighbours" initiative is now also to be launched in Nieder-Roden. Better familiarisation between residents can help to prevent crime.
    • The eighth cultural weeks of the city of Rodgau are starting and promise a colourful and entertaining programme. Around 40 events are set to brighten up the autumn for the people of Rodgau. What is particularly impressive is that most of the events on offer during the five weeks come from the cultural life of the region.
    • TSV Dudenhofen's unicyclists win seven gold, 16 silver and ten bronze medals at the German Cup in Bottrop.
    • Helping to shape the new millennium in an elective subject. The Georg Büchner School took part in the "Open School 2000" competition and created a website for a local bookshop. Now the pupils are hoping to win the first prize of 25,000 marks.
  • November

    • The ensemble "Das Große Welttheater" receives the town's culture prize for its performance of "Schinderhannes".
      It's a done deal: the police station in Dudenhofen is to be manned around the clock from January 2001, thus increasing the sense of security among Rodgau residents.
    • Carnival has Rodgau firmly in its grip. The new reigning couple are Silke I (Seum) and Markus II (Koser). Lothar Mark hands over his presidential chain to former prince Rudi Ott. 20-year-old Christopher Sattler receives the Giesemer Fastnacht sponsorship award.
    • The manager of a grocery store in Dudenhofen is in for a nasty surprise. In the early hours of the morning, a masked man, who threatened the employee with a gun, stole around 10,000 marks.
    • Rodgau's streets are to become safer, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. A traffic concept includes - much discussed - crossing aids, lane narrowing and widening. The costs are estimated at around two million marks.
    • Not a drill but a real fire alarm calls the fire brigades from Nieder-Roden and Dudenhofen to the "Holiday Inn" in Nieder-Roden. An overheated fan led to a smouldering fire. As a precaution, the entire staff and all guests are evacuated from the hotel.
    • Just in time for the pre-Christmas season, 40 stars shine on the lanterns along the Jügesheim thoroughfare.
    • A flurry of flashing lights of a completely different kind can - unfortunately once again - be seen on the road: Speeders speed into various controls. The absolute record was set by a driver travelling at 142 km/h instead of the prescribed 60 km/h at the Rodgau Ringstraße junction.
  • December

    • Christmas markets, Christmas trees you can cut yourself and Advent concerts attract the people of Rodgau to the streets and the forest.
    • Almost a year after the accident at the "Capitol" in Offenbach, where a falling disco ball seriously injured two women, charges are now being brought against seven people. All of them are allegedly guilty of grievous bodily harm.
    • Rodgau now also has an "inventors' club". At the Heinrich Böll School, young inventors work together to solve problems with the support of the school management and the Ministry of Research. It may even be possible to go to the patent office one day.
    • The dream of a community centre in Jügesheim is dreamt in a model. Eleven architecture students from Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences present their ideas for a possible development of the TGS site on the Ostring.
    • The first double budget of the city of Rodgau is adopted by parliament.
    • The Friedlandhilfe, which is organised by Adolf Hessler, is celebrating a special anniversary. For 30 years now, toys, sweets and lots of nice things have been bringing great joy to the children of the refugee and repatriate camp.
    • The Christmas message unites all Rodgau residents. Pastor Markus Nett from the Protestant parish invites you to the Dudenhöfer Gänsbrüh. The trombone choir provides the musical backdrop with well-known carols. Around 1,200 people from all parts of the town and beyond celebrate Christmas Eve together.
