Biotope network & species protection

The creation, preservation and maintenance of measures for the protection and conservation of nature and landscape in the Rodgau district is our task.

Biodiversity

To preserve biodiversity, the measures support endangered species. There are a large number of rare species in the local districts for which the city of Rodgau assumes responsibility by developing and financing measures.

Endangered species

  • Spadefoot toad
  • Nightjar
  • Ducat butterfly
  • House martin
  • Skylark
  • Various bat species

These species are supported by creating new or maintaining existing feeding and development habitats.

Species close to settlements

However, species can be promoted not only in nature and the countryside, but also close to settlements. At the end of 2018, a species protection house for house martins, bats and cavity-nesting birds (great tit, blue tit, nuthatch, starling, tree sparrow, common redstart) was therefore erected at the Rollwald camp cemetery.

Legally required measures

In addition to the voluntary species protection measures, the town of Rodgau is regularly obliged by law to implement measures to compensate for and replace structural interventions in nature and the landscape. This is usually triggered by the development of new building areas and construction projects outside the built-up urban area.

Compensation or replacement measures

The town of Rodgau has set itself the task of compensating for construction-related impacts on nature and the landscape not only in the same natural area, but also as close as possible to the impact site in its own urban area. To this end, comprehensive analyses are carried out with experts to identify areas that are worth preserving from a nature conservation perspective and can be ecologically upgraded. If it is not possible to implement these measures on site, the city of Rodgau's eco-account is utilised. The nature conservation measures contained therein have already been implemented and are already fully functional. Compensation payments are only made in exceptional cases.

Evaluation of measures

The nature conservation value of the measure is determined with value points. These are then credited to an eco-account held by the district's lower nature conservation authority. These value points are then debited in the event of subsequent intervention in nature and the landscape.

Environmental report

In addition to the tasks already presented, statements on environmentally relevant projects are drawn up in cooperation with the Environment Department, the annual environmental report with a wide range of environmental topics for the city of Rodgau is prepared, an annual environmental day is organised and environmental advice is offered as a public service for citizens on a wide range of environmentally relevant topics.
