Applying for deregistration for a vehicle without registration
Service description
If you want to deregister your registration-free vehicle with an assigned licence plate, you must apply for a deregistration. This applies, for example, to
- Light motorbikes
- Forklift
- Self-propelled machines
- Trailers for sports purposes or working machines
Once you have deregistered the vehicle, you may no longer drive it on the road or park it in public areas.
You can submit the application in person or through your representative at the relevant registration authority. You can also deregister your vehicle online via i-Kfz.
If you have the vehicle scrapped, you will need a certificate of destruction from the car recycling company to deregister it, which confirms that the vehicle has been disposed of properly.
If you do not have your vehicle scrapped, you can have the vehicle's licence plate reserved for later re-registration for up to one year.
Procedure
You can apply for the deregistration of a vehicle that does not require registration at the registration authority or online.
If you would like to apply for decommissioning on site at the registration authority:
- Present the required documents on site.
- Indicate whether and if so, where the vehicle was scrapped.
- If the vehicle has not been scrapped, you have the option of reserving the licence plate for this vehicle for a maximum of one year.
- The registration authority checks the documents and cancels the registration certificate part I or the old vehicle registration document and the licence plates.
- You pay the administrative fees incurred.
- This means that your vehicle has been taken out of service.
- From this point onwards, you may no longer drive your vehicle on the road or park it in public areas.
If you would like to apply for deregistration online via i-Kfz:
- You call up the i-Kfz portal of the registration authority responsible for you.
- Enter the necessary data in the portal's application form, for example
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Licence plate number
- Indicate whether and if so, where the vehicle was scrapped.
- If the vehicle has not been scrapped, you have the option of reserving the licence plate for this vehicle for a maximum of one year.
- Uncover the security codes on the registration certificate part I or on the vehicle registration document and the licence plates.
- Enter the released security codes in the application mask.
- By entering the security codes and after payment has been made, the vehicle is taken out of service and the notification is sent to you by post and e-mail.
- From this point onwards, you may no longer drive your vehicle on the road or park it in public areas.
