Vehicle licence plate reservation

    Would you like a specific combination of letters or numbers for your licence plate, for example

    • a name abbreviation,
    • the abbreviation of your company,
    • a date of birth or marriage or
    • Would you like an "old licence plate" for your vehicle that is available again in your district, together with a specific identification number?

    For a fee, you can apply for a licence plate of your choice or reserve one in advance.

    If you would like to use the licence plate number of your deregistered vehicle again later in the same administrative district, you can have the identification number reserved for a certain period of time for a fee and apply again in connection with the re-registration or registration of another vehicle. A reservation of the licence plate number expires if you move a deregistered vehicle. Please contact the registration authority beforehand.

    Attention:

    • Subsequent changes to a licence plate combination allocated to a vehicle are only possible for an additional fee.
    • A licence plate reserved in another registration district cannot be taken to the new registration district when moving.

    Note: The registration authorities will try to fulfil your wishes. However, you have no legal claim to a preferred licence plate.

    At most registration authorities, you can reserve or apply for licence plates in person, in writing or by telephone. Many registration authorities also offer an online service on the Internet.

    Note: You can find out how long your licence plate will be reserved for you directly from the relevant office.

  • Which documents are required?

    If you have reserved a licence plate in advance, you will need the reservation confirmation for the registration procedure.

  • What fees are incurred?

    In addition to the fees for the authorisation, you will incur fees based on administrative expenses for

    • Customised number plate: EUR 10,20
    • Reservation: EUR 2,60

    Note: If you opt for an "old licence plate" with several distinguishing signs in an administrative district, you only have to pay a licence plate fee if you also want a specific alpha-numeric combination.

    Please note: An additional electronic enquiry is required to determine whether the registration number you require can be allocated by the registration authority. The fees therefore also apply if your desired licence plate number is not available.

    The additional fee is also charged when reserving or reissuing a licence plate that has already been issued at an earlier date.

    If you want to re-use your licence plate in the same administrative district when you deregister your vehicle, you can reserve it for a certain period at most registration authorities for a fee and also apply for it again in connection with the registration of another vehicle.
